Durante a Segunda Guerra, o RLM (ReichLuftfahrtMinisteriun) padronizou as cores de todos os aviões usados pela Alemanha. Esse padrão é conhecido comumente pela própria sigla RLM. Esses padrões especificavam quais deveriam as cores dos aviões e como deveriam ser camuflados, de acordo com sua função. Naturalmente, essas especificações mudaram com o clima, locais e funções em que os aviões atuavam.
Após o início da campanha da Rússia, sentiu-se a necessidade de identificar mais facilmente os aviões, para distinguir entre amigos e inimigos. A partir de então, os aviões alemães passaram a usar faixas e listras coloridas, principalmente amarela (RLM 04), vermelha (RLM 05), verde e branca. Essas faixas dependiam do local onde a aeronave atuava, pois se fazia necessário um contraste com o terreno e ao mesmo tempo, que todos os aviões amigos tivessem o mesmo padrão.
Os trens de pouso, cockpits e outras partes metálicas expostas costumavam ficar no primer natural (RLM 02) ou então pintados com RLM66 (Veja no link de cada avião para saber o correto).
Esta é uma lista alfabética de todos os códigos conhecidos. Este tipo de marcação era usada em todas as unidades de ataque ar-ar e algumas de ataque ao solo, e algumas unidades de caça pesado. Este código é sempre alfanumérico, e aparece à esquerda da insígnia nacional.
